Rehabilitation of a brick manhole by epoxy spraying
- Client : Victoriaville City
Cost-effective, non-excavation solution to extend the life of infrastructure
The outdated brick manhole located under Rue de la Gare, a pedestrian shopping street in downtown Victoriaville, was showing signs of deterioration and needed to be replaced. Interested in the many advantages offered by the rehabilitation of underground infrastructure using epoxy spraying, the city’s director of public works selected this manhole to test this solution offered by Soleno Service.
The epoxy spray infrastructure rehabilitation service was chosen as the best solution for repairing this brick manhole.
The brick manhole to be rehabilitated, measuring 900 mm (36 in) in diameter, had several defects: the presence of stagnant, foul-smelling water, the absence of a gutter and drain at the bottom, erosion of the lower brick walls, and deterioration and crumbling of the upper concrete walls that had been restored.
The Soleno Service team prepared the surface to be rehabilitated by first cleaning it to remove all contaminants. Then, the cracks were filled, and the irregularities in the manhole profile were corrected using Solhydroc brand cementitious products. Soleno Service technicians also created a gutter to remedy its absence and rebuilt the crowns, which were heavily eroded and degraded.
Once the profiles had been restored, a coat of SSR-175 epoxy primer and sealer was applied to ensure good adhesion of the SSR-405 epoxy coating. This product is free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is composed of 100% solids (no shrinkage).
In addition to giving this newly revitalized manhole a second life and restoring its structural capacity, the solution offered by Soleno Service made it possible to preserve the newly paved pedestrian crossing. Unlike conventional replacement, rehabilitation using sprayed epoxy requires no excavation or connection to existing pipes, which can be complex tasks for an aging network. Furthermore, epoxy spray rehabilitation is economical and available at a fraction of the cost of replacement, in addition to reducing the repairs usually required after complete manhole replacement work. Completed in less than three days, this solution significantly reduces the impacts associated with traffic management and allows the site to be restored outside of working hours, thereby reducing the impact on residents and businesses in this revitalized neighborhood.
