The rehabilitation of a concrete manhole will enable the city of Châteauguay to expand its industrial park.

Countering parasitic water
Faced with excessive daily wastewater flow at its St-Jean-Baptiste pumping station, the city of Châteauguay opted for epoxy and polyurea spray rehabilitation, a solution offering numerous advantages. Approached by the city to assess the work, Soleno Service experts quickly determined that the problem stemmed from a concrete sanitary manhole located upstream of the station, which was sending more than 140 m3 (4,944 cu ft) of parasitic water into the network every day. The head of the environmental health division of the public works and engineering department of the city of Châteauguay therefore commissioned Soleno Service to rehabilitate this concrete manhole located at 42 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Street.
The concrete manhole to be rehabilitated, measuring 900 mm (36 in) in diameter, had several defects: no gutter or drain at the bottom, degraded and cracked walls, crumbling seals, and a high water table that exacerbated all the problems.
The solution of rehabilitating underground infrastructure by spraying epoxy and polyurea was the ideal solution to meet the needs of the city of Châteauguay.
By eliminating the daily volume of parasitic water of 140 m3 (4,944 cu ft), the rehabilitation of this manhole allows the city of Châteauguay to open a housing project of about 100 single-family homes or their equivalent on its territory, a project that was not feasible before the rehabilitation work carried out by Soleno Service.
This rehabilitation eliminated the parasitic water volumes that were entering the network directly through this faulty manhole. It also enabled the pumping station to operate more efficiently by restoring normal daily wastewater volumes, allowing the existing pumps to return to normal operating conditions with half the usual usage, thereby reducing energy costs.
In addition to giving this manhole a second life and restoring its structural capacity, the solution offered by Soleno Service preserved the integrity of the road network, underground infrastructure, landscaping, and street furniture. Unlike a conventional replacement, which would have required extensive and disruptive construction work, rehabilitation using sprayed epoxy and polyurea requires no excavation and therefore poses no risk of damage to underground infrastructure and utilities on the site.
In addition, this solution is economical and offered at a fraction of the replacement cost (50% less), in addition to reducing the repairs usually required after complete manhole replacement work. Completed in about five days, this solution significantly reduces the impacts associated with traffic management and allows the site to be restored outside of working hours, thereby reducing the impacts on citizens, motorists, and public transit users in the area. During the work, only about ten parking spaces had to be temporarily closed during working hours in order to create adequate space for the team and Soleno Service’s mobile rehabilitation unit.
